Boardwalk Project

We are currently in the fundraising phase of a new addition to the Morse Wildlife Preserve, a boardwalk to connect approximately 25 acres of wetlands and mixed forests of the eastern portion to the prairie areas in the west.   This terrain has great interest and potential as an additional educational site for classes, water monitoring, and observations of aquatic life and waterfowl.  A new boardwalk and associated trail system will open the opportunity for broader and richer educational programs, expansion of the ongoing research activities, and improved stewardship of this exceptional property.  In addition, this new access will allow volunteers to remove invasive plant species more effectively, furthering our restoration program.

As a volunteer-friendly project, the building process will proceed through the wetlands without the use of any heavy construction equipment. In addition, the environmentally-friendly support system allows for "floating" direct contact with the ground surface that does not require digging or disturbing the impacted area.

The walkways will be adjustable to various levels of standing water, wetlands, ground movement, freezing and thawing. Turns in the boardwalk do require a little more work and expertise. The final product will have bridges with railings for water crossings, educational observation decks and edge guards.

When completed, the boardwalk will be attractive, safe, and amenable for educational and recreational outings, while causing very little disturbance to the natural environment.

Donations for the boardwalk project are currently be accepted through our educational partner, Tahoma Audubon Society.
