What is a Forest Steward?

Woman with shovel

Forest Stewards are committed volunteers who are interested in being highly involved in planning and coordinating restoration on their local park. They receive special training and resources, so no experience is necessary. Program staff work with each Steward to create a restoration plan for their site and provide resources for Stewards to organize volunteer events to carry out the restoration.

Read the Forest Steward job description here.

Forest Stewards are now doing great work in Farrel-McWhirter, Hartman, Westside/Bridle Crest Trail site, Grass Lawn, and Viewpoint Neighborhood Parks. Please email greenredmond@cascadeland.org to get involved in these great community-led restoration projects!

The Viewpoint Stewards set up a website - check it out!

A History of Success

This program has been extremely successful in Seattle, where over 65 active Forest Stewards are key players in the hundreds of acres of restoration that is done each year.

“It just amazes me that each volunteer that works on our project puts their own piece into the larger puzzle. It is not just me doing lots of the work, but by being there and hosting the event, I help get people involved in their neighborhood. I look forward to the day that I can walk through a forest that I helped create.

–Jay Mirro, Seattle Forest Steward

This is a significant commitment of at least 3 work party events per year, and yields huge results.

We rely on our Forest Stewards to reach our restoration goals. Learn about other levels of involvement through the Youth Steward Program and Restoration Volunteer Events.
