Canyon Creek Preserve (KG12)

Location: King County, near Fall City

Acreage: 27.76 acres

Ownership History: CLC acquired this land from a private landowner in 1997, and a conservation easement was subsequently set up with King County Parks.

Property Description: The site lies on the brow of a prominent hill above a farming valley near Redmond-Fall City Road and has an impressive view over the valley and the Cascades.  The property’s elevation gradually descends from the brow of the hill to the stream bed of Canyon Creek.

Conservation Values: It is important to protect this beautiful area because nearby properties appear to be working timberland.  The property is well-vegetated and lies within a mature second growth forest with signs of coyote and deer.  The upper portion of the property is dominated by a mixed canopy of Douglas fir, hemlock, bigleaf maple, and alder, while the lower portion is dominated by western red cedar and cottonwood.  This property is an important part of a larger network of forested properties which ring the farmland along Redmond-Fall City Road and buffer the valley from housing developments.  Its proximity to both the Cleveland High School Memorial Forest and the King County open space property provide viable habitat for a variety of mammals, birds, and plants.
