No photo credit available
Location: King County, Wedgewood neighborhood of the City of Seattle
Acreage: 4.00 acres
Ownership History: With the increase in development pressures, a group of homeowners sought to further ensure the preservation and good stewardship of this ravine through a partnership with CLC and the City of Seattle. CLC has been organizing conservation easements along Maple Creek Ravine with several landowners since 1997.
Property Description: Maple Creek is a “Y” shaped tributary to the greater Thornton Creek drainage system. A year-round stream originates from springs in both branches of the creek. The heart of the ravine is about 16 acres in size and about one-third of a mile in length.
Conservation Values: The Maple Creek Ravine is an important part of the larger Thornton Creek watershed, providing significant habitat in the densely populated Wedgewood neighborhood. It is well-vegetated, with the predominant native vegetation including Douglas firs, red alders, western red cedars, bigleaf maples, sword ferns, Indian plums, salmonberries, salals, and Oregon grapes. Residents along the rim of the ravine have sighted pileated woodpeckers, barred owls, kestrels, and eagles, as well as coyotes, raccoons, opossums, and other small mammals and birds.
