White Center Heights Park Revitalized

An overview of this great park in White Center, its dramatic transformation, and how the Cascade Land Conservancy was there to help.

This is the story of a neighborhood park in White Center, its dramatic transformation, and how the Cascade Land Conservancy was there to help.

Located in the White Center neighborhood of unincorporated King County situated south of Seattle, White Center Heights Park is the story of a successful partnership between King County Parks, University of Washington, White Center Community Development Association, Cascade Land Conservancy, and the help of hundreds of concerned citizens. In 2007, this nearly forgotten park has seen a most remarkable transformation.

History of Neglect

wchp-photo3.jpgFor many years White Center Heights Park was all but forgotten. Invasive Himalayan Blackberry and Japanese Knotweed had grown over many parts of the park, making it inaccessible and uninviting. Some area residents were not even aware that this "abandoned field" was any sort of formal park at all. Others regarded the park as unsafe and a high crime area - unfortunate considering the close proximity of White Center Elementary School and the possibilities of the park as a an outdoor classroom only a few blocks away.

A New Beginning

wchp-photo2.jpgIn 2007, Starbucks Corporation nominated White Center Heights Park for their annual park "Ultimate Makeover", pledging $550,000 for the renovation of the northern half of the park. Over the course of only one week in June 2007, a workforce of hundreds of volunteers descended on the park and completely overhauled it. Invasive species were removed, park benches installed, a pea-patch, bird houses, and even a barbecue pit were added. The change was dramatic. Still, more work was needed to be done especially on the southern half of the park where a wetland and riparian area are located.

A Bright Future

As plans were being drawn up to deliver the "Ultimate Makeover", the Cascade Land Conservancy was hard at work in the Legislature to ensure even more funding for work on White Center Heights Park. The effort was a success, and $500,000 was secured. A second phase of work could now be initiated to improve access to the southern half of the park. This section is particularly interesting as it has a year-round pond, adjacent wetland and riparian area. Encompassing a little over two acres, this "Class II Wetland" will receive a boardwalk, viewing platform, and maintenance of invasive weeds starting in spring 2008. Thanks to the efforts of the community, King County, UW and Cascade Land Conservancy, this promising neighborhood park is sure to delight generations of curious explorers.
