Youth and Young Adult Volunteering
By participating in volunteer restoration activities with CLC, youth and young adults gain:
- Valuable restoration and plant identification skills
- Fulfillment of service learning requirements
- Discovery of and appreciation for our communities’ natural lands
After reviewing the options below, please contact Stacy Cachules, Manager of Volunteer Programs (206-905-6931) to schedule a time to join us at a restoration event!
Classrooms, youth groups, clubs, after school programs and individuals can become involved in environmental restoration activities through one of the following options:
Youth Stewards
- Description: Individual youth and young adults are always welcome at our volunteer events. Participate in a one day event at a CLC property or a Green Cities Partnership site to restore the area to its natural habitat (ecological value). A list of upcoming events is always posted on our events page.
- Expectations: Individual(s) will assist in the stewardship of a site by removing non-native species, planting native species and assisting with general maintenance of the site. (Activities will vary by season and property). Student is required to arrange for their own transportation and bring a signed youth waiver form at the beginning of the event.
- Support provided by CLC: CLC will provide the property, tools, training, materials and directions. CLC will also provide a staff person to give safety and best management practices training, as well as oversee the work throughout the restoration event.
Stewards for a Day
- Description: Participate in a one day event at a CLC property or a Green Cities Partnership site to restore the area to its natural habitat (ecological value).
- Expectations: Students will assist in the stewardship of a site by removing non-native species, planting native species and assisting with general maintenance of the site. (Activities will vary by season and property). School or group will provide supervising staff and transportation.
- Support provided by CLC: CLC will provide the property, tools, training, materials and directions. CLC will also provide a staff person to give safety and best management practices training, as well as oversee the work throughout the restoration event.
Seasonal Stewards
-
Description: Commit to two visits to the property or park within a school year for invasive removal and then native species planting on the second trip.
- Expectations: Students will make a first trip to the site to learn about the threats posed by invasive, non-native species, and then they will take part in invasive removal. Second visits may include monitoring, maintenance or planting. Visits may vary depending on the time of year. Ideally the participation would take place in the fall and spring.
- Support provided by CLC: CLC will provide the property, tools, materials and directions to the site. CLC will also provide a staff person to give safety and best management practices training for the activity, as well as oversee the work throughout the restoration event.
Adopt-a-site
- Description: Make a commitment to stewarding a site and take part in the full four stage restoration cycle, from pulling invasive weeds to planting native species and monitoring the health of the property.
- Expectations: Commit to three to four visits to the site in one school year. We also prefer a multiple year commitment. It would be expected that with time and training of the adult leader, the group could visit the property without the assistance of CLC staff.
- Support Provided by CLC: CLC staff and our volunteer forest or land steward will work with the classroom or group to create a restoration plan for the designated site. CLC will provide the property, tools and materials for the work parties and directions to the site. CLC will also provide a staff person to give safety and best management practices training for the activity, as well as oversee the work throughout the restoration process.
