Volunteer with the Cascade Land Conservancy

volunteer groupThere are three main ways in which volunteers can contribute their time, enthusiasm and skills to the Cascade Land Conservancy: restoration events, policy/advocacy work and/or volunteering in Conservancy offices as an intern or special event volunteer. These options allow volunteers with a diverse array of skills to contribute equally to the Conservancy

Remember, if you don’t have time to volunteer in one of these ways donations and in-kind contributions along with becoming a Conservancy member are other powerful ways to help. The Conservancy also offers volunteer opportunities that are tailored specifically to community groups, corporations and young adult or youth volunteers.  By volunteering with the Conservancy not only will you be working to make this region a more spectacular place to live but you will also receive fun Conservancy benefits and program perks! Read below or click on the below categories to learn about all the ways you can volunteer.

Restoration Opportunities

There are two Conservancy-sponsored ways to volunteer with restoration events throughout the Puget Sound Region: volunteering with the Conservancy sponsored Lands restoration events or volunteering with Green Cities programs in Seattle, Tacoma, Kirkland and Redmond.  With both programs, Restoration Volunteers work to remove invasive species and plant native vegetation. A wide array of locations allow for volunteers to work on land preserves or in local forested parklands. Volunteer events are held year-round throughout King, Kittitas, Mason, Pierce and Snohomish Counties. For volunteer who are looking for greater involvement, the Stewards Program (below), trains volunteers to be restoration leaders.

Restoration Events are held on Conservancy protected lands through King, Kittitas, Pierce, Snohomish and Mason Counties. Events are sponsored by our County Trustee Chapters and are led by trained staff and volunteers. Community and business groups are welcome. Volunteers spend their time surrounded by beautiful landscapes, getting plenty of exercise, engaging with enjoyable company and working hard to root out invasive species and plant native plants. Join one of the scheduled work parties posted on Events page. Restoration events are appropriate for youth volunteering and can be tailored to community group and corporate volunteering.

Green City Partnership Restoration Events

Cascade Land Conservancy’s Green City Partnerships program develops public-private partnerships with municipalities to develop community-based stewardship programs for forested parklands and natural open spaces. These partnerships have the 3 main goals: connecting nature with an improved quality of life, creating an informed and active community and improving the long-term health of the urban forest. Current Green City Partnerships exist in Seattle, Tacoma, Kirkland and Redmond. Restoration events are run by partner organizations or the City and take place in local urban parks. To learn more about volunteer events with specific Partnerships visit the: Green Seattle, Green Tacoma, Green Kirkland or Green Redmond Partnership websites and check out photos of Green Redmond Partnership volunteers in Action!

Steward Program

Steward Training

Stewards are volunteer leaders who take a significant role in the Restoration Program.  Stewards are trained by Conservancy staff to monitor properties or forested parklands, document threats, help with on-the-ground restoration and coordinate restoration work parties. Stewards act as the eyes and ears in the field, and play an essential role in reaching out to the surrounding communities. Steward roles are available through the Conservancy Lands Program, Green Seattle Partnership and Green Redmond Partnership Forest Steward Program

Policy and Advocacy Opportunities

Community Stewards is our newly launched initiative to train volunteer leaders in the community to guide local decisions about future growth, making their communities even better places to live while helping to save the region’s farms, forests and natural areas from poorly planned development.  Their training will allow Community Stewards to take action as issues arise, and successfully guide their local neighborhoods toward a complete, compact and connected future. If you are interested in becoming a community steward take a look at this steward tool kit and contact us: volunteer@cascadeland.org
