What is i-Tree Eco?
i-Tree Eco is a detailed environmental services benefits model designed to quantify the structure, environmental effects, and value of trees in urban and wildland-urban ecosystems. The results from an i-Tree Eco project can be used by natural resource managers and municipal planners for making effective resource management decisions, to develop policies, and set priorities. For more information, visit www.itreetools.org.
Who should attend?
This two-day workshop is designed for urban and interface foresters, natural resource managers and consultants, and state or federal extension personnel who have the capacity to train others or will provide this service to their customers as a comprehensive forestry assessment.
What you will learn?
This workshop will teach you 1) how to set up an i-Tree Eco project step-by-step, 2) introduce how sampling is done across a study site, 3) the data collection methodology, or how to set up a plot and how and what data to collect, 4) how to enter data into the i-Tree Eco database, and 5) how to interpret and use the reports that the application generates.
This program has been reviewed and is approved for professional CFE credits by the Society of American Foresters Category 1-CF (12.0 hours) and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) under the International Society of Arboriculture Certification Program (Certified Arborist: 13.0, Municipal Specialist: 13.0, BCMA - Management: 13.0).
Who are the instructors?
Al Zelaya is an Urban Forester for The Davey Tree Expert Company and a member of the i-Tree Team. His primary responsibilities include development, research, training, website administration and providing technical support for domestic and international i-Tree projects. Zelaya has more than 10 years experience working in urban forestry, arboriculture and natural areas management at the state and local levels. Al is an ISA certified arborist and serves as a member of the instructor cadre for the Society of Municipal Arborists’ (SMA) Municipal Forestry Institute (MFI) program. Zelaya has a bachelor of arts from DePaul University in Chicago, Ill., and is currently completing a master’s degree in natural resources and environmental sciences from the University of Illinois.
Kelaine Vargas is an urban ecologist whose love of nature and cities guides her work. As a graduate student, she studied landscape architecture and forestry and pursued research in these fields as a Fulbright Scholar in Berlin. In 2005, she returned to the United States to take a position as an urban ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service at the Center for Urban Forest Research, where she was instrumental in the development, testing, and distribution of the i-Tree software suite. She is the author of a number of research publications related to the development of i-Tree and its applications across the United States. Kelaine currently serves on the i-Tree team as an ecology consultant, helping governments, educational institutions, and businesses make use of i-Tree to apply the principles of urban forestry in their quest for sustainability.
