Naches Trail Preserve Work Party
Saturday February 21 -
from 9:00 am-12:00 pm
Preserving prairies and floodplains in South Puget Sound:
Thanks to the hard work of many community members, more than 50 acres along Clover Creek in our neighborhood is permanently designated as the Naches Trail Preserve! Pierce County Public Works & Utilities Water Programs owns the land and is working in partnership with Cascade Land Conservancy and community members to restore the property to a more native natural state and to care for it in perpetuity.
The Naches Trail Preserve is part of the mosaic of South Puget Sound’s prairie landscape. Only 5 percent of this habitat and its wildlife remain intact, and the goal of this work party will be to maintain and protect the remnants on the preserve. The areas on-site that need to be cleared of Scot’s broom are grassland and oak savanna. Scot’s broom is a non-native, weedy plant. It takes over natural areas diminishing the variety and abundance of native grasses and wildflowers, thereby further decreasing habitat and its availability to wildlife.
Remove Scot’s broom from Naches Trail:
Join us on February 21 for a community effort to remove invasive plant species in the Naches Trail Preserve. This 50-acre property includes high quality wetlands, riparian habitat along Clover Creek, and grasslands. We will spend the morning wrenching out Scot’s broom.
What to bring:
Sturdy boots (preferably waterproof), work clothes, gloves, rain gear and a water bottle.
