Robe Canyon
CLC recently protected a key
property adjoining Robe Canyon Historical Park, considered the gem of
the Snohomish County Regional Park system. Situated along the South
Fork Stillaguamish River, Robe Canyon Park encompasses almost 1,000
acres of unparalleled wild and scenic land on both sides of Robe
Canyon. Old Robe Trail, the centerpiece of the park which runs along a
portion of the historic route of the Monte Cristo Railroad, is used by
thousands of hikers each year.

The property acquired by CLC is critically located at the trail head along the Mountain Loop Highway at the northeastern end of the park. The acquisition protects significant river-frontage, mature riparian forest, and forested upland that could have been developed. At the same time, it will enable Snohomish County Parks to extend the trail for low-impact recreational use and environmental education purposes. An old road that extends from the Mountain Loop Highway through the property will allow development of disabled and emergency access to the park.
A generous contribution from one of our members
allowed CLC to move quickly to acquire the property, which was
immediately transferred to Snohomish County Parks for inclusion in the
public park. Funding for the acquisition by Snohomish County Parks was
through Conservation Futures. CLC will continue to work to preserve
additional wild lands along this stretch of the river, protecting
pristine riparian habitat and opportunities for passive recreational
uses.
