County Snapshot

Kittitas County spans from the peaks of the Cascades in the Upper County to arid shrub-steppe in the Lower County.

Shrub Steppe

Agricultural lands specializing in timothy hay production sits between these landscapes. Kittitas County's landscapes provide jobs, expansive wildlife habitat, and endless recreational opportunities. It leaves no wonder why Kittitas County's population is the fourth fastest growing county in Washington. Lake Kachess

While increased population spurs economic growth, the rapid conversion of resource lands into homes is quickly changing the County's rural character. Without linking growth to land conservation, the long-term viability of Kittitas County's agricultural economy and recreational opportunities may be threated. Together, residents of Kittitas County and  CLC can make a difference.

Get Intimate with the Shrub-Steppe

Cascade Land Conservancy has been working closely with the Kittitas Environmental Education Network to educate the public about the local ecosystem (shrub-steppe) and all its wonders.  The 10th annual Get Intimate with the Shrub-Steppe held on the first Saturday in May brings together shrub-steppe experts and the curious.

This year (2009) CLC sponsored a children's activity on pollination; kids dressed up like butterflies and bees. With wings on their backs, pollen baskets strapped to

their legs, and a probosis in their hand; they had one minute to collect pollen from enormous, brightly colored flowers.

The kids learned about the small insects and animals that call the shrub-steppe home.
