Reports to: Green Cities Program Director
Location: Seattle, WA
Position Type: Class III, Full-Time, Salary-exempt
Salary: Up to $40,000 annually, D.O.E.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have a background in natural resources and forest ecology, experience in field data collection, expertise in tree identification, measurement techniques, and analytical processes, knowledge of GIS and spatially-based sampling protocols, experience working with or leading a crew in field work, and excellent communication and writing skills.

Cascade Land Conservancy (CLC) is a leading edge regional nonprofit land conservation organization, with offices in Pierce, King, Mason, Snohomish and Kittitas counties in Washington State. It also engages in estuary and near shore conservation and stewardship in other coastal counties. CLC’s is heading the Cascade Agenda – an innovative program to conserve our region’s major landscapes in tandem with the creation of vibrant cities.
Summary of PositionThe Forest Assessment Coordinator will be responsible for designing and implementing a forest ecosystem values project for selected sites in Seattle and King County. The current project is a 2-year, federally-funded project between Cascade Land Conservancy, King County, the USDA Forest Service, the University of Washington, and other partners.
Specific Duties1. Serve as lead staff in the design and implementation of forest ecosystem values project, using i-Tree Eco or related software.
2. Train field crew in data collection techniques and collect field data over two seasons.
3. Analyze data and prepare best management practices report in cooperation with project partners.
4. Pursue additional project needs as requested.
Required Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, urban forestry, forestry, environmental sciences, or related field and 2+ years of experience. Advanced degree may be substituted for experience.
2. Knowledge of Pacific Northwest forest ecosystems (urban and rural).
3. Experience designing and implementing field-based research project (site selection, sampling, data collection methodology).
4. Expertise in tree identification and forest measurement techniques.
5. Ability to train others in field data collection processes.
6. Demonstrates resourcefulness and strong problem-solving skills.
7. Knowledge of GIS and spatially-based sampling protocols and analysis processes.
8. Ability to organize and manage diverse activities and set priorities.
9. Flexible and able to work well under pressure, with limited direct supervision.
10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including successful proposal and report writing experience.
11. Ability to develop a positive working relationship with a variety of stakeholders including landowners, elected officials, community supporters, staff and volunteers. Successful experience working independently and in groups in both office and field settings.
12. Ability to work some non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends (with comp time).
13. Ability to work under physically demanding conditions, including cold and wet weather.
14. Valid, insurable drivers license/record.
Preferred Qualifications1. Master’s degree in natural resources, urban forestry, or forest management.
2. Experience with i-Tree software.
3. Experience as a team or crew leader.
4. Expertise with GIS and spatially-based sampling protocols and analysis processes.
